The Five Elements of Korean Saju

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — the five natural energies (오행) at the heart of Korean astrology, and how their balance shapes who you are.

In Korean Saju (사주) — the Four Pillars of Destiny — everything is built from five elements, known in Korean as 오행 (ohaeng) and in Chinese astrology as the Wu Xing. Think of them as five kinds of energy that flow through nature and through you. Your birth chart is a unique mix of these five, and their balance is the heart of every Saju reading.

The five elements, one by one

  • Wood (木) — growth, vision and kindness. Wood people reach upward like a tree, always expanding and nurturing.
  • Fire (火) — passion, warmth and expression. Fire brings light, charisma and the drive to be seen.
  • Earth (土) — stability, loyalty and care. Earth is the grounded centre others lean on.
  • Metal (金) — refinement, principle and clarity. Metal is precise, disciplined and quietly strong.
  • Water (水) — depth, wisdom and adaptability. Water flows around obstacles and knows things intuitively.

How the elements feed and control each other

The five elements are never static — they interact in two cycles. In the generating cycle(상생), each element nourishes the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (ash), Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water grows Wood. In the controlling cycle (상극), each element keeps another in check: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

A good chart is not about having all five in equal amounts — it's about balance and flow. An element you have a lot of shapes your strengths; an element you lack often points to what you most need.

Your Day Master and the elements

One element represents you at the centre of your chart — your Day Master. Every other element is read by how it supports, drains or challenges your Day Master, much like planets around a sun sign in Western astrology.
